A concise summary of present biochemical, genetical, nosological, and epidemiological knowledge of the abnormal hemoglobins and of the hemoglobinopathies, thalassemias, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiencies. Summary of current methods of treatment. Suggestions for further research with particular attention to epidemiology and further study of the relation of malarial mortality to genetic advantage in these disorders. One appendix tabulates population frequencies for hemoglobins S and E, for beta-thalassemia, and for G-6-PD deficiency (male); a second appendix lists compounds known to have induced hemolysis of G-6-PD-deficient cells.
