Longfellow's phrase ". . . things are not what they seem . . ." might be used to describe this monograph. The title and jacket blurb suggest that the volume contains the essence of both cardiac and pulmonary function tests. In fact, it contains a comprehensive but elementary review of pulmonary physiology, a short section on right heart catheterization, and is completed by sections on phonocardiography and spatial vectorcardiography. There is no discussion of electrocardiography, pressure tracings, pulse tracings, venous pressure, left heart catheterization, echocardioggraphy, etc. which might be expected in a book with this title.
