The senior author, a surgeon, states in the introduction that he intended to write a manual summarizing physiologic, clinical, roentgenologic, and operative aspects of congenital and acquired diseases of the aorta and the great vessels. At the same time, he aimed at "producing a work in which a physician or surgeon concerned with angiology would be able to orient himself rapidly and use as a reference source for specialized topics or problems."
