Epidemiologic studies have clearly shown that radiation exposure plays a role in the induction of thyroid neoplasms in man (reviewed in references 1 and 2). In these studies, it has been observed that a large proportion of children and young adults with cancer of the thyroid give a history of prior X-ray treatment to the neck region and that the prevalence of thyroid cancers, adenomas, and nodules in irradiated populations is higher than in nonirradiated groups.
