Two papers on narcotics in this issue of the ANNALS, by Louria, Hensle, and Rose (1) and by Cherubin (2), should be of more than passing interest to a wide variety of physicians. Their work forcefully draws attention to the fact that, although much of the discussion about addiction centers on social and psychological aspects, there is also an important clinical and biological side. Internists, psychiatrists, pathologists, general practitioners, and even pediatricians are daily confronted with this fact in the form of medical emergencies and diagnostic puzzles in those who abuse drugs.
