There is perhaps no other area of medicine so plagued by problems in communication than the complex of syndromes encompassed in the terms emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and obstructive lung disease. Meetings, published papers, and textbooks are rendered incomprehensible and irritating by obvious lack of agreement as to the significance and the proper use of these terms.
