These two yearly collections share the terms annual and review in their titles but they have little else in common. The British "Basis" has been and remains a group of review papers originally presented as lectures. These papers reflect their origin by their brevity and clarity; they are usually most readable. Some even entertain a bit while they inform (for example, E. J. M. Campbell's "Exercise Tolerance"). They are designed more to sketch concepts than to critically examine hosts of details, and they are of value chiefly to the non-specialist. Annual Review is quite a different kettle of fresh fish
