The first brave steps toward the compilation of a comprehensive atlas of mammalian chromosomes have been taken. The authors' intention is to publish the karyotypes of approximately 50 species each year. The atlas is in loose-leaf form so that the karyotypes may be rearranged later into their proper taxonomic groupings, thereby providing ready access for comparisons among related species and for evaluation of various karyological characteristics within a karyotype.
