The theme of my contribution to this important symposium is to be the impact of medicine and medical research on the genetic welfare of human beings. I should explain that Prof. Lederberg and I have agreed on a division of labor that allots the domain of genetics to me, while I—not to be outdone in magnanimity—have made over all my rights in the field of transplantation to Dr. Thomas Starzl.
