A year ago in the ANNALS Munson (1) reviewed the properties of thyrocalcitonin, and more recently the subject was discussed at length at a symposium in London (2). From its behavior during purification it seemed likely that thyrocalcitonin was a protein; this has now been confirmed in studies in which treatment with peptidases was shown to destroy activity (3). However, it is clear (4, 5) that the initial preparations of thyrocalcitonin (6) were only partially purified and that the molecule is smaller than first reported. One indication of this was obtained in studies of the distribution of the hypocalcemic activity
