Sudden unexpected death of a young athlete is not an unfamiliar event, but as part of the uniquely poignant tragedy it represents there are often few medical facts to report. In such deaths there is a limited number of possible mechanisms, of which a sudden cardiac arrhythmia is one. For this reason we have recently studied the hearts of two young athletes who died suddenly although previously considered to be in good health and in whom the routine necropsy provided no explanation. Special examination of the cardiac conduction system was performed in both cases, and in one it was possible
