What irony, that a nation whose drug industry spends millions on advertising seems unable to produce a truly adequate handbook of drug therapy. This judgment rests on three assumptions: American physicians need a handbook of drug therapy; money spent on advertising represents resources that might be drawn on to produce the handbook; and present handbooks are not adequate.
There is not space here to consider the first two points. The third is relevant to considering the two books under review. What would be an adequate handbook? It would include enough pharmacologic description of classes of drugs for their rational use;
