The need for a concise, practical introduction to cardiovascular sound and pulse recording techniques has been met rather well with the publication of Dr. Tavel's monograph. While true proficiency in obtaining and interpreting such records, like the ability to perform a gastric resection, is best acquired by "doing" at the elbow of an experienced teacher, structured guides such as this book speed the learning process by providing a framework of basic knowledge. Those who do not have an opportunity for prolonged formal training in these external recording methods can acquire reasonable competence by study of this text.
