German-reading students and physicians with an interest in kidney disease should welcome these two new textbooks. Sarre's Nierenkrankheiten is, to my knowledge, the first major text in German since Reubi's, which appeared in 1960. The book by Royer, Habib, and Mathieu appears to be the first modern text, in any major language, on pediatric nephrology.
Royer and colleagues offer an especially comprehensive survey of these disorders—nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, hereditary nephritis, the "tubulopathies," and so forth—which though clinically uncommon nevertheless comprise the most interesting problems in pediatric nephrology.
