An anthology of recipes for herbs as used in home treatment, cooking, and preparation of toiletries from the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth. Recipes are grouped in four chapters according to herb use; each chapter has an introductory essay. The opening chapter describes herb gardens and methods of preservation.
Does not survey the place of herbs in pharmacopeias of the time but does give an adequate picture of the variety of herbs used and the uses to which they were put in domestic "medicine."
Generously illustrated. Has a bibliography and an index.
