A classic textbook known throughout the English-speaking world. Because of its orientation to examination for surgical disorders and omission of areas of physical diagnosis of great importance in internal medicine, it cannot be recommended as the sole textbook for a course in clinical examination. It is, however, a valuable supplement to a less detailed, more broadly based text for the medical student, house officer, and physician. Very brief biographical footnotes identify physicians credited with eponymic signs and disease terms, but these would be more useful if to them were added concise citations of original descriptions. Generously illustrated with vivid photographs
