Of the 26 classical (sic) papers reprinted in this anthology, only 3 are of importance in a nonsurgical view of the urinary tract: Goldblatt's 1934 paper on hypertension produced by experimental renal ischemia (Journal of Experimental Medicine); Huggins' paper on the effects of castration, estrogen, and androgen injection on serum phosphatases in metastatic carcinoma of the prostate (Cancer Research, 1941); and Beeson's "The Case against the Catheter" (American Journal of Medicine, 1958). Each reprint is followed by a "lookback" by the original author or a competent substitute.
