Short monographs such as this can be helpful. They briefly summarize current thinking about a subject and organize a good deal of material into a short and logically presented form. This outline, and it is no more than that, will not be of much help to the sophisticated and up-to-date gastroenterologist or abdominal surgeon. It would be an excellent starting point for the physician in training or someone not actively involved in gastroenterological problems and literature.
