To the Editor: In an article entitled "Energy Balance and Body Compositional Changes," which appeared in the February issue of the ANNALS, Grande (1) has presented a brief review of energy expenditure data and has criticized three recently published papers, one of them ours, which utilized body composition techniques to evaluate total starvation in the treatment of obesity (2-4). We believe that Dr. Grande has made some erroneous assumptions with regard to energy expenditure in the obese, and with reference to our paper has drawn some incorrect conclusions based on his assumptions:  Dr. Grande made calculations of energy expenditure
