Teaching and understanding current concepts of acid-base chemistry and physiology in health and in disease continue to be challenging tasks for both instructors and students, and, unfortunately, there is no new or recent textbook that deals with this topic in depth. This program for self-instruction does, however, provide an excellent introduction to this area of physiology in medicine.
The Bronsted and Lowry theory of acids and bases is developed in the opening section and is followed by sections dealing with acids, bases, and buffers in plasma and whole blood. The relationships between plasma bicarbonate, whole blood buffer base, and whole
