On 23rd September, 1518, a Royal Charter for the College of Physicians of London was handed by His Majesty, King Henry VIII, to our founder and first President, Thomas Linacre (Figure 1). Our College is the oldest English medical corporation, and this year we celebrate its 450th anniversary. Our celebrations will reach their culmination during the third week of October and will be centred around our annual Harveian Oration and Dinner. We very much hope that the President of your great College, Sir, will grace this occasion and give us the pleasure of his company.
