In order to establish the diagnostic specificity of gamma globulin deposition at the dermal-epidermal interface in the clinically normal skin in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 150 skin biopsies have been studied using immunofluorescent techniques.
The biopsies investigated were from patients with SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, other connective tissue diseases, glomerulonephritis, and malignant diseases as well as from clinically normal persons. Cryostat sections of skin samples obtained by punch biopsy were stained for globulin using a fluorescein-conjugated anti-human globulin preparation.
