The mammalian erythroid cell is a highly specialized element adapted to the synthesis of predominantly a single protein, hemoglobin. The cell membrane, in addition to maintaining the internal environment of the cell, participates actively in other metabolic activities. These studies define a role for the cell membrane in the metabolism of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and thus the control of protein synthesis in the cell. Approximately 25% of both nonribosomal RNA and ribosomal RNA is bound to the cell membrane.
