This study was designed to investigate the role of the stomach in the regulation of iron absorption. Gastric secretions were collected after betazole (Histalog®) stimulation from normal humans and patients with iron deficiency anemia and hemochromatosis. The pH of each secretion was adjusted to 1.2 to avoid the effects of pH alone on iron absorption. Absorption was studied in ten totally gastrectomized anemic and ten sham operated female Sprague Dawley rats by determining total body radioactivity immediately and 14 days after an oral dose of 59Fe and carrier.
