Marrow hemosiderin patterns in over 500 patients 11 were analyzed to determine their diagnostic value. Marrows were prepared according to a modification of the method of Rath and Finch. Evaluation of quantity and predominant particle size of iron was made. In each type of anemia encountered (iron lack, primary or secondary refractory, hemolytic, hemorrhagic, and APA factor deficiency), consistent correlation of the hemosiderin pattern with known ferrokinetics as established by 59Fe data was obtained. Confirmation of the previously reported finding of absence of marrow iron in polycythemia vera was made in all cases studied. Furthermore, a hemosiderin pattern was observed
