The electron microscopic study of the kidneys of patients with infectious mononucleosis and urinary abnormalities has not been reported previously. Four patients with infectious mononucleosis as diagnosed by the presence of heterophil antibodies and positive Davidson differential test and who had mild hematuria were biopsied.
The biopsies were studied with the light and electron microscope. Only minimal changes were seen by light microscopy, consisting of moderate glomerular swelling and congestion without hypercellularity and having small foci of interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration.
