Considerable data obtained during non-steady-state conditions seemed to indicate that insulin deficiency was not the sole cause of maturity-onset diabetes and led to the suggestion that "insulin resistance" might play an important role in the hyperglycemia of some patients with maturity-onset diabetes. This concept has recently been challenged, and several groups have stated that insulin deficiency, either absolute or relative, is sufficient to account for hyperglycemia in all patients with maturity-onset diabetes.
