Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an antibody to altered immunoglobulin G (IgG), but its role in pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been established, nor has the nature or origin of any in vivo gamma globulin autoantigen been determined. Our earlier studies showed that RF-IgG complexes are demonstrable in synovial fluid phagocytes in RA; also that synovitis can be induced in quiescent joints of RF seropositive RA patients by intra-articular injection of 3 mg of IgG from Gm-matched rheumatoid serum, but not by IgG from normal serum.
