The Handbook of Physiology sponsored by the American Physiological Society is the successor of the old German handbuch. As stated in its subtitle, it is "a critical, comprehensive presentation of physiological knowledge and concepts." It is indeed! The newest volume, the second in the section on physiology of the alimentary canal, covers secretion. The roster of authors of chapters is the roll of top research-contributors in each area, and each author has tried to make his own chapter the definitive summary of its area. The result is not the book for a quick review of any aspect of secretory physiology
