In 1958 reports appeared of an endemic nephropathy arising in the Danube basin. Ten years later a Ciba Foundation Study Group met to review the accumulated information about this condition; and the present volume of proceedings consists of papers by the Yugoslavian, Bulgarian, and Rumanian investigators together with the discussion and comments of a group of eminent nephrologists, physicians, and toxicologists. The clinical picture that emerges is that of an insidiously progressive nephropathy with severe anemia but with only mild hypertension. Its prevalence is greatest in villages in eroded valleys and, when it occurs, it tends to affect whole households.
