A recent upsurge of interest in the science of dermal ridges (dermatoglyphics) has come about because of the associations shown to exist between dermal ridge configuration and chromosomal disorders. Although unusual dermal ridge configurations were recognized in Down's syndrome some 30 years ago, it was not until the last few years when Down's syndrome was shown to be due to a chromosomal aberration that the whole field of human cytogenetics burgeoned.
