ROBERT DREW, M.B., F.R.C.P.
Chemoprophylaxis is only one aspect of defence against malaria. The drug proguanil (Paludrine®) is reserved for this purpose since it is believed that the risk of falciparum parasite resistance is thereby reduced to a minimum.
Protection of the individual soldier is the responsibility of the unit commander, the Medical Services being responsible for antimalarial measures in the geographical area. Antimalarial control units are used for residual spraying to clear jungles and drain swamps.
The British Army in Malaysia has encountered few cases of drug resistance recently, except in Southern Johore.
