The high morbidity and mortality from liver disease has increased the need for clinical texts on hepatology to supplement special mongraphs and general texts. Whether a seasoned investigator and clinician of the author's stature should spend the time required to write a comprehensive text of this nature has been questioned. The effort in this instance is clearly worthwhile and deserves plaudits of all engaged in preventive medicine and patient care.
