In 1961 Websters Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged* (G & C Merriam Co., Springfield, Mass.) was published. It was the eighth in the series. The reviews varied from gushing praise to bitter condemnation, but it was clear that this book had established itself as the standard, for it was not compared with other dictionaries but only to its previous editions. Dr. Wintrobe's book occupies a similar position. Reviews of the fifth edition mention increasing weight, numbers of pages, and numbers of references. Yet no reviewer seriously questioned the preeminence of this work. For the sixth edition the situation is unchanged.
