Research on liver metabolism has advanced at a rapid rate during the past several years. The key role of the microsomal cytochrome P450 in the metabolism of a host of drugs and endogenous substrates has been recognized. Major strides have been taken in understanding the control mechanisms for porphyrin and heme formation. While it is generally appreciated that the bile pigment mines have been worked full time, it is less well known that research in bile acid metabolism has undergone revolutionary advances during the past several years.
