Ten essays were contributed by students and friends of Dr. Scherago, who was trained in veterinary medicine and has devoted many years at the University of Kentucky to teaching and research in the field of microbiology. He has been honored further by the publication of this attractive volume at the University of Kentucky Press.
The papers are disjointed, without a central theme, and of varying quality. Particularly outstanding for me were the essays, "Microbial Life at Low Temperatures," and "The Bacterium and the Challenge—Listeria monocytogenes." One of Dr. Weaver's colleagues reviews "Microbiology at the University of Kentucky."
