A cold agglutinin screening test showed reactivity in 12% of 507 patients with primary atypical pneumonia. By comparison with a quantitative cold agglutinin procedure simultaneously performed, it was shown that this screening method was sensitive to a titer of 64 or greater with a high order of specificity. The utility of this rapid, easily performed cold agglutinin test in the detection of treatable Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in office or hospital practice is described.
