Authors of pocket-size manuals intended to assist the young house officer in medical emergencies must constantly weigh brevity against completeness, simplicity of approach against accuracy, and practical value to their young readers against the criticisms of the reviewer. This brief British manual strikes a reasonable balance for its intended audience, junior physicians who have not seen the common crises of the emergency room.
