Fecal electrolyte and nutrient losses vary greatly with the length of the gastrointestinal tract in continuity and with composition of food ingested. To understand the effect of altering the level of salt intake on these losses, one patient with jejunostomies, seven with jejunocolostomies, three with ileostomies, five with jejunoileostomies, and a normal control were fed either ad libitum diets or constant diets to which salt was added in incremental amounts. Approximate daily stool losses on ad libitum diets were as follows:
Stool weight and sodium losses increased linearly in all groups, including the normal control, as salt intake was increased
