This study determined whether lymphocyte reactivity, a particularly important component of cellular immunity, was altered in patients undergoing various forms of surgery. The experimental protocol consisted of harvesting peripheral blood lymphocytes from cell donors before operation, within 24 hr after leaving the operating room, and at determined intervals thereafter. The lymphocytes were grown in duplicate in cell culture, each vial containing autologous plasma and phytohemagglutinin as an in vitro stimulant.
