Oxygen conductance from environment to tissues is regulated by such mechanisms as blood flow and hemoglobin concentration which have established importance. Another mechanism capable of ameliorating oxygen delivery to the tissues in case of hypoxia is a shift in the oxygen dissociation curve. It has been possible to show that this mechanism comes into action over a period of 1 to 2 days and that it appears to be regulated by the erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate content that in turn appears responsive to venous oxygen saturation.
