The mortality of patients with spontaneous lactic acidosis has been exceedingly high. All nondiabetic patients with spontaneous lactic acidosis have died, and only a few diabetic patients have survived. The present report describes the complete recovery of a diabetic patient with severe spontaneous lactic acidosis.
The clinical association of lactic acidosis with diabetes is reviewed. It is concluded that there is no clear evidence indicating an increased incidence or cause-and-effect relationship between spontaneous lactic acidosis and diabetes.
