Two years ago when the subject was reviewed here (1), it was forecast that the structure of porcine calcitonin (or thyrocalcitonin) would soon be known. It was suggested that the structure of human calcitonin might be elucidated by analyses of differences. Surprisingly, these predictions have been surpassed (2). Last year three groups almost simultaneously (3-5) described the amino acid sequence of porcine calcitonin, and shortly after that in two laboratories the complete synthesis of the 32 amino acid peptide was achieved.
