The committee on Statistics of the American Diabetes Association has recently recommended a procedure for conducting oral glucose-tolerance tests (Diabetes 18: 299, 1969). In surveys of prevalence of this disorder the manner of testing for diabetes has varied considerably. Glucose-tolerance tests with different loading doses, times of collection of specimens and different means of collecting, preserving, and analyzing specimens have been used, and the results have been varied. Furthermore, arbitrary criteria for diagnosis of diabetes have sometimes been adopted and the results published simply as positive or negative rather than giving the actual figures observed.
