With the sharp increase in the use of hospital emergency rooms for the treatment of acute problems there has emerged a new specialty, that of the emergency physician, and a spate of texts has appeared in the last decade to assist in the practice of the specialty. The requirements of a satisfactory reference for this purpose include a quick-and-easy indexing system, a concise definition of the presenting problem, and a clear, brief presentation of the salient features of emergency management. Information regarding long-term management, basic mechanisms, and prognosis may also be given.
