To the editor: Winterbauer, Bedon, and Ball, in an article titled "Recurrent Pneumonia" (Ann Intern Med 70:689-705, 1969), proposed "to analyze predisposing causes and patterns of infection in a large group of patients with recurrent pneumonia." However, they list illnesses that occurred in patients with recurrent pneumonia only. Unfortunately, the failure to compare their patients with a reasonable control group should have prevented the authors from concluding that the associated illnesses they describe are related to recurrent pneumonias; these associated illnesses might be characteristic of pneumonias in general, or may simply represent the common illnesses of the patient population seen
