To the editor: I read with great interest the article by Dr. Glaser and Dr. Walker entitled "Transition Among Myeloproliferative Disorders" (Ann Intern Med 71:285, 1969). Our group reported on 137 patients with agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (1). We pointed out that 24 of these patients had had previously documented polycythemia vera and that neither the presence of previous polycythemia vera nor the state of the marrow at the time of diagnosis of myeloid metaplasia produced any apparent change in the probability of the patient's survival when compared with patients with idiopathic myeloid metaplasia.
