Pulsed, reflected ultrasound was used as a noninvasive tool to evaluate the performance and dimensions of the left ventricle (LV) in 20 patients with various types of heart disease before diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Ultrasonic measurements included LV end-diastolic diameter (LVDd), LV end-systolic diameter (LVDs), and LV posterior wall thickness (WTu). These dimensions and their derived relationships were compared with hemodynamic assessments of LV performance including angiocardiographic LV end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), major and minor axes, wall thickness (WTa), and mass (LVM) as well as their derived values. Significant correlations were found between LVDd and EDV (r = 0.75);
