Samples of adipose tissue were obtained at surgery or from open biopsies in obese patients. Fat cells were prepared by incubating pieces of fat at 37 C in a buffer containing collagenase. Fifty to 150 fat cells were measured with a binocular microscope using an ocular micrometer. The mean diameter of fat cells from 13 samples of normal fat was 74.7 ± 3.3 µ with a range of 61 to 90 µ.
