Paracentesis and the administration of diuretics to reduce the ascites of patients with cirrhosis of the liver may lead to impaired renal function. To obviate the difficulties inherent in the use of each alone, reinfusion of ascitic fluid with the simultaneous administration of mercurial or thiazide diuretics has been used. However, this results in only modest diuresis. We evaluated the use of more potent diuretics in combination with ascitic fluid infusion in the management of massive ascites.
